We’re moving!

Hi Everyone! we just want to say that we are moving this blog to our studio site.
Check it out in www.sokistudio.com.ar

Right now the page of “Can you see me?” is empty of images and videos, and it’s in spanish (sorry for that). But we’re working on this, trying to finish the web page, filling all the contents and so.

We really apologize you for all this time when we don’t write anything here, we were also very excited for the movie, but we start to do thing to survive (I mean work for money) and that’s why we do a pause in the project.

We hope this movie get finished soon this year.

King regards for all, and have a good year!

open movies helps to create other open movies! :)

Hello there!

It’s been three days or four days since we release the first trailer/teaser. Unfortunately we didn’t receive much feedback :( . And you know that the comments and critics are really necesary because give us the posibility of see through other’s eyes for a moment.
Despite that, we go on with this, because we love this project, we love the characters, the story and how it’s going! And we are really close to finish it! :D

Well, returning to the post! I think that we never explain why this movie is tagged as an “Open Movie” or “Open Content Film”.

Quoting Wikipedia:

Open source films (also known as open content films and free content films) are films which are produced and distributed by using free and open source software methodologies. Their sources are freely available and the licenses used meet the demands of the Open Source Initiative (OSI) in terms of freedom.

:)

So to be clearer, this movie is done entirely with open source software as:

  • Blender (for modeling, animation, composition, editing, etc)
  • Inkscape (for inicial draw, concepts, schemes, logo, typo, titles, etc)
  • Gimp (for texturing, sketches, concepts, etc)
  • Ubuntu 11.04

Also the content of this movie will be released online to be downloaded for free by anyone who want it under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license. (characters with textures and rig, props, sets, textures, etc!)
This license means that you can freely reuse and distribute this content, also commercially, for as long you provide a proper attribution.

As the title say, this open movie, also is created because other open movie released their content before! (and thanks for that!) some props are taked from Bick Buck Bunny and some textures from YoFrankie! Also, not from open movies but from open content we get some props like houses and other stuff from BlendSwap and 3dmodels by katorlegaz! Thanks guys for that too! If you are one of the creators of one of the models used in the movie, please write us so we can include you on the credits!

We are going to publish a list of all the “imported” props so you can check if one is done by you.

As you can see on the image open contents are really usefull!

Well, stay tuned for more news!!!

Trailer released!

Hi everyone! It’s very special day for us because today we finish the trailer of “Can you see me?”

It’s very short because we dont want to reveal the story, and because we cannot render too many frames as we told before.

Hope you like it and please make a comment and feel free to distribute it to all your friends :D

about render and farms :P

01_AO

hello!, it’s pablo here!

as the title says, this post is about render, and because we dont have too much resources it’s about renderfarms too.

Well, first of all, let me start telling you about our movie. The final render size is going to be 1280×720 (HDTV 720p) ideally for web and dvd distribution. We currently are doing the lighting without Ambient Occlusion and Environment Lighting, it’ll save us a lot of time between frame and frame (sometimes is like 3x faster without that). Also, we are trying to keep models simplier, low poly and without subdivision surface (only main models will have 1 or 2  level of subsurf). So lighting will be based on spot lamps with shadow buffers.

So, even when we want really simply and fast ways to render, the times are really slow when we try to render shots.

Let me show you a small sheet with some facts:

Without Ambient Occlusion With Ambient Occlusion
frames x second 24 frames x second 24
frames x minute 1440 frames x minute 1440
aproximate movie length 7 min aproximate movie length 7 min
average render time x frame 2 min average render time x frame 8 min
-> render time x second 48 min -> render time x second 192 min
-> render time x minute 2880 min -> render time x minute 11520 min
Total Time needed Total Time needed
minutes: 20160 minutes: 80640
hours: 336 hours: 1344
days: 14 days: 56 :S

Render times based on a iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0ghz 2.5Mb Ram

and, a quick render test between the two renders:

Without Ambient Occlusion (2 minutes)

With Ambient Occlusion (8 minutes)

Well, probably this shot is not the best example of showing the difference between using ao and not using it. Personally i really like with AO, but as you can see 56 days of render is just crazy impossible.

So we are looking for help, a renderfarm will be great, if you have one, or maybe you can help us to find one. Please write us a comment or send us an email to pablo_lizardo (at) yahoo.com.ar with the information.

We’ll be posting things almost every day, so stay in touch!! :) and please give us some feedback trought the comment section below, is very important for us!
